More Impact, Less Spend

We all know professional development initiatives like mentorship are beneficial for both employees and employers. But increasingly, people teams are being asked to do more with less.

More Impact, Less Budget

Does the following statement sound familiar?

“I am so frustrated with having to choose between something that actually has impact OR something that scales”

I have heard this exact thing from dozens of HR leaders over the last five years.

It has always reminded me of the fitness industry (bear with me here). Imagine if I told you that your only workout choices were dancing away to a 1980s jazzercise video that is free on YouTube, or paying $10,000 for a personal trainer. Which would you choose?

Well, obviously neither!

If you are a fan of Peloton, you probably saw this coming (and confession, I still am)….For less than $30 a month, you can have thousands of world-class fitness trainers teaching you, with amazing music, customized recommendations – and choices of which workout modality suits you each day. And you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home or waste time getting to and from the gym.

For myself, as a CEO and working mom to three kids under 10, the combination of affordability, quality, and convenience of Peloton is a life-saver.

Digital consumer platform technology has enabled access to such high-quality programming possible at scale.

Why are we so far behind in the L&D world?

In a world where 43% of people plan to leave their employers this year, we have to pay more attention to what our teams want and need.

According to a report published by the Execu|Search Group, 86% of respondents said they would change jobs if it meant more opportunities for professional development.

There is abundant evidence that mentoring, coaching, training, and peer learning are all critical to growing our careers… with mentoring alone leading to a 5X increase in promotions.

Yet access to these resources is limited to the privileged few. To those who attended a top-tier business school. To those who can afford to pay thousands. To those who already made it to senior management levels. I had the privilege of attending Stanford Graduate School of Business, and spending over a decade with McKinsey & Company – receiving excellent coaching, mentoring, training, and leadership development. And I left acutely aware of how inequitable access remains to such opportunities.

And for those who don’t have such privilege? Free access to mass content libraries with overwhelming volumes of variable-quality content, with minimal focus on production quality or highly engaging delivery.
